Source Critique #1

The article “Main Causes of the Great Depression’ by Paul Alexander Gusmorino
was published on May 13th 1996 online on gusmorino.com by the author himself. This article is about the some of the causes of the Great Depression. I could not tell if this was a blog or an article because the main page of the website was down.
Some of the main points of this article were the causes of the Great Depression.
He states that the depression was caused by the greatly unequal distribution of wealth throughout the 1920's, and the extensive stock market speculation that took place during the latter part that same decade. It was also caused by the growing gap between the rich and the poor in terms of economy.
When I searched Google for the authors name, I found that he had written a lot of articles about American history. He had also written an article about a possible second Great Depression which’s means he must know enough about the first one to be able to predict another one.
I believe the article is useful for me because my cause/effect essay is about the causes of the Great Depression and this article states most of the causes that I need to be able to write the essay.

Interest Statement for Essay #2

The word that I am going to chose for the Definition Paper you assigned is the word: Dark. I believe that this work has a lot of meanings and a lot of people misuse it sometimes .
A lot of people say that I can be a dark person in terms of personality because I sometimes will tell a morbid joke but I believe I am far from being dark. Dark can also be meant in negative in terms if a person uses it to describe or make fun of their skin color and use these racial slurs too hurt people.
Some resources that I can use are Answers.com, Dictionay.com, and the best resource for a definition essay: a plain old dictionary. I will google the word and see If I can find any other articles on that word.
Some of the benefits I can receive by writing this paper are that I can prove my friends wrong by saying I’m not “dark” whenever they call me dark. I can learn the word origin and see what language it comes from. I can also see if there is any other definitions other than the word meaning “gloomy” or “morbid”
Since we will be writing this essay in class, I can spend the majority of my weekend doing research on the word and make a works cited page ready for when I write the actual paper. I also need to invest time to buy not one, but two blue books for my essay. I also need to invest time on Sunday and Monday to make sure that I go to sleep early so I can be rested to make sure I can write that essay to the best of my ability.

Interst Statment for Essay #1

Interest Statement of Essay #1
They essay that I am going to write is about how children that are raised by parents that are married than children that are raised with divorced parents. My Parents area still together and I am not a trouble causing teenagers and a lot of kids my age in my neighborhood have divorced parents and they get arrested all the time.
Some sources I can use are magazine articles. My mom has a whole stack of “Time” magazines and I might give them a look through. I’ll use google to search for websites that have articles on the topic. Ill will see if I can go to a library to look or articles in books for some information.
The Benefits I may receive my writing this paper is that I can find out the hardships of children that have to spend certain days with on parent and certain days with the other parent. My friends that are in this situation say that they like it because when they see their parents, they get spoiled a lot. Even though it would me nice to have all the materialistic items I desired, I would hate the fact that my parents were not together.
What I need to do to complete this task is to start researching right away because I am a procrastinator. I think I can do all my research in half a day at the library and can spend the next day typing and the day after proofreading.

My Belief in UFOs

Ever wonder if there are other forms of life outside Earth? For most people, a race of unidentified humanoids can be a hard concept to understand. I am not one of these people. I believe that there is life out there in our vast universe. Many try to hide this concept with many unorganized lies and many refuse to believe the thought due to various reasons, but the fact remains that they are out there. I believe that aliens and other forms of life exist out side of Earth.
A question is brought up when people talk about extra terrestrials. How can there be a planet that can support life other than Earth? Well just recently there was a planet discovered in the Gliese Galaxy called Gliese 581 C. In “New planet found: It might hold life” by David Perlman, a science editor for the San Francisco Gate Chronicle, quotes Xavier Delfosse, a member of the Gliese 581 C’s discovery team, as he says
"This planet will most probably be a very important target of future space missions dedicated to the search for extraterrestrial life. On the treasure map of the Universe, one would be tempted to mark this planet with an X.” Perlman also writes “The object is the smallest of all the 200 or more so-called "bioplanets" whose discovery around far-off stars in the past dozen years has sparked a burst of excitement worldwide among astronomers and biologists.”
By writing this, Perlman proves that there are other plants like earth that are able to support life.
When the word alien comes to mind, people that live in the United States automatically think of one word. Roswell. The story of Roswell has been altered, trashed, and hidden but the fact remains: There were aliens at Roswell. As the story goes, on the evening of July 2 1947, unidentified flying objects were spotted flying above Roswell, New Mexico. Later the next day, two unidentified wreckages were discovered. Richard Dean quotes Major Jesse Marcel, a staff intelligence officer of the 509th Bomb Group Intelligence Office at the Army Air Forces base at Roswell Field, in an article “Roswell - The Facts, Truths and Eyewitness Accounts” as Marcel describes the first wreckage that was discovered:
There was all kinds of stuff - small beams about three eights or a half inch square with some sort of hieroglyphics on them that nobody could decipher. These looked something like balsa wood, and were of about the same weight, except that they were of about the same weight, except that they were not wood at all. They were very hard, although flexible, and would not burn. There was a great deal of unusual parchment-like substance which was brown in color and extremely strong, and a great number of small pieces of a metal like tinfoil, except that it wasn't tinfoil. This foil could not be dented with a sledgehammer"
Soon after this wreckage was discovered, a second wreckage was found. This wreckage was similar but this one had something the other did not have, Dead Bodies. Dean quotes Grady L Barnett, a civil engineer with the US Soil Conservation Service who was on a military assignment at the time and also the first witness of the second wreckage, as he descries the wreckage:
“I tried to get close to see what the bodies were like. They were all dead as far as I could see and there were bodies inside and outside the vehicle. The ones outside had been tossed out by the impact. They were like humans but they were not humans. The heads were round, the eyes were small, and they had no hair. The eyes were oddly spaced. They were quite small by our standards and their heads were larger in proportion to their bodies than ours. Their clothing seemed to be one-piece and grey in color. You couldn't see any zippers, belts or buttons. They seemed to be all males and there were a number of them. I as close enough to touch them but I didn't - I was escorted away before I could [do so].”
This proves that humanoids from other planets do exist. This was one of the biggest alien and unidentified flying object sighting in the United States ever. If you can’t trust what members of the military saw, then I don’t know who to trust.
A lot of people follow a religion that is affiliated with the Bible. The majority of these people also believe that there is no such thing as aliens. Their beliefs are contradicting themselves because in the Bible, it implies that there are extra-terrestrials even though it implies they are here for different reasons. Isaiah 13 states:
“4 The noise of a multitude in the mountains, like as of a great people; a tumultuous noise of the kingdoms of nations gathered together: the LORD of hosts mustereth the host of the battle. 5 They come from a far country, from the end of heaven, [even] the LORD, and the weapons of his indignation, to destroy the whole land”
This implies that there might be extra-terrestrials and they might work for God. Another reason for alien existence from the bible states that aliens might work for Satan. Gary Goodwood quotes Thessalonians 2:9-11:
"Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie.”
Goodwood writes concerning this section “I believe that Satan will counterfeit the return of Christ by staging a mass landing of UFOs.” So in fact the Bible does prove that there are aliens in our universe and religions that are affiliated with the Bible should acknowledge their existence.
A lot of people think I am a freak or a nerd because I believe in Aliens. I tell them I have proof to back my beliefs and I am not weird for believing in the truth. I believe that aliens are out there and they pass by Earth once in a while just for a look or want to explore our lands by taking their family on a stroll. Whatever the reason, aliens have been on Earth and will again. I just hope I can manage to see one before I die.

The Causes of the Great Depression

The Great Depression was a time in U.S. History of economic downturn due to the fact that stock market had crashed. This lead to everyone was being bitter due to the fact that no one had money and everyone was struggling to obtain some. But this lead to a huge problem. Nobody knew why the stock market crashed. Now that it has been more than 80 years we know what causes made the stock market crash. The Great Depression was caused by many more reasons then the stock market crashing.
Macroeconomists, including the current chairman of the U.S. Federal Reserve Bank System Ben Bernanke, have revived the debt-deflation view of the Great Depression originated by Arthur Cecil Pigou and Irving Fisher(Wiki). These people believe that debt is one of the main factors of the Great Depression. The United Sates spent a lot of money on buying businesses and factories and they where using money that they did not have. They used these factories to produce stuff at an enormous rate and the demand was lowering but the supply was growing. This lead to inflation, causing these businesses to get less money which lead to massive lay offs of employees resulting in a 25% unemployment rate(Wiki). Banks that financed a lot of this debt failed due to massive withdrawal of money of debtors worried about their money. With banks failing no one could get money out of the bank, thus contributing to the depression.

During the Great Depression, America had a 100% gold standard which meant that all American currency was backed by a certain amount of gold. This was not good when people began to hoard all the money meaning that people began to withdraw all their money so they can have their money in convertible form. With everyone withdrawing everything they have, banks were running out of convertible money and began producing money that they did not have the gold to back up. This meant that people started using money that had no value. This it self contributed in no one having money to spend which helped contributed to the depression.

At a crucial time in its history, the U.S. made it harder for countries to trade with them. Martin Kelly, a American History expert, writes in his article “ Top Five Causes of the Great Depression“:
As businesses began failing, the government created the Hawley-Smoot Tariff in 1930 to help protect American companies. This charged a high tax for imports thereby leading to less trade between America and foreign countries along with some economic retaliation.
Americans need this trade with other countries so they could be able to live easily. Without these necessities, Americans found it hard to live.
The Great Depression had many factors that lead up to its beginning. The stock market crash was not the only reason that caused the depression, it also had a lot to do with the government trying to be greedy along the people withdrawing all their money from the bank so they could have proof that they actually had some. It was also the bank’s fault for giving away money that had no gold to back it up. The Great Depression is a misunderstood time period of history and people should do research before assuming that the crash was the only cause.

Summary and Response to “National Prejudices”

The article “National Prejudices” by Oliver Goldsmith is about his encounter with some elderly people and a conversation about Nationalism. He starts off by stating that he is drinking at a bar and draws himself onto a conversation held by a group of elderly men about political affairs when one of the men states that the English are better than the Dutch, Germans, French, and Spaniards. When the elderly man asks Goldsmith his opinion on the statement he replies that he wouldn’t know if English was the best because he has not gone to visit these countries to compare them. He quotes a philosopher that we should not “countrymen” but we should be “citizens of the world” meaning we should view ourselves as inhabitants of the world and not of a certain part of it. Goldsmith states that it is ok to love one’s own country but its not okay for one’s love to continue to grow.
He concludes the article by stating that its okay for one to love ones’ country without hating another and he rather be a “citizen of the world” rather than an appellation of some sort.
I found this essay really boring and did not like the point. I think that it is better to label myself an American then label everyone as the same when it comes to nationality. I believe that some countries are better than others, American being one of the best, should not be dragged down by citizens of the world.. I believe that it is fine for a person’s love for one’s country can continue to grow instead of being muffled. I also fond the middle of the article most confusing and hard to comprehend due to his sophisticated language use. I did not know where the sentences started or ended. I did not like this essay at all.

Summary and Response to “Why the rich are getting richer, and the poor, poorer”

The article “Why the rich are getting richer, and the poor, poorer” by Robert Reich is about the Why the economic gap between the rich and poor is growing larger. He states that all Americans are in different boats, one sinking rapidly, one sinking more slowly and the third rising steadily. Reich states that the boat that is sinking rapidly contains all the routine producers. He claims that routine producers are losing their jobs due to American outsourcing jobs to 3rd world countries. People in these countries would gladly get paid a fraction of what Americans get paid, which saves businesses a lot of money. Then he states various examples of outsourcing such as AT&T looking to employ people in Singapore to assemble phones rather than hiring people in Shreveport, Louisiana. Reich continues by stating that the second boat that was sinking slowly held in person servers such as cashiers, banks tellers and car washers. He states that these jobs are slowly being replaced by robots and other automated machines. Reich writes that the third boat contains the symbolic analysts. These people are America’s smart people such as scientists, artists, politicians and other people of this sort. Reich also states that the gap is growing due to better world communication. In the 1990’s, the American corporations started to fall which lead to the producers and servers to become less paid and the “White Collar” workers to get higher paid. He concludes the article by stating that the corporations failing and good world communication was the beginning of outsourcing
This article had its pros and cons. I liked the fact that he explained why the gap between the rich and the poor is growing very well. I didn’t like the fact that this article was really long due to the fact that Reich kept giving unnecessary examples. I did not like the ending because it was really hard to follow. I did like the fact that it explained outsourcing. I myself had an experience with outsourcing. My wireless internet was down and I had to fix the router, so I called the router company and it seemed that the companies calls were outsourced to India because every time I called I would get a person with an Indian accent. I had an neutral feeling about this article.

Summary and Response to “The Circle of Governments”

The article “The Circle of Governments” by Niccolo Machiavelli is about his opinion on the forms of governments. He starts off by stating the three forms of government: the monarchical, the aristocratic, and the democratic. Then he states that these governments can be degraded into other types of government . For example: monarchy degrades to tyranny, aristocracy becomes oligarchy, and democratic lapses into licentiousness. He continues by stating a how a monarchy was first formed and how it quickly became a tyranny by making the throne hereditary. The children of the original king would not follow the same values as the father and believed in living in luxury rather than focusing on politics. Machiavelli goes on to describe the newly form of government of an aristocracy with a small number of nobles in charge with everything. These noblemen did not take interest with what the people wanted and instead took interest in what they wanted. He states that this government was quickly overthrown as well and replaced with the popular government. Machiavelli reveals that this government did not last long due to the officials seeking personal passions and committing acts of injustice daily and this were overthrown and the government went back to monarchy. Machiavelli states that the circle of governments of is the basic formula of the monarchical, the aristocratic, and the democratic, is one that all republics are destined to run through but rarely go back to the first form. He concludes the article by stating that no type of government is perfect because the good ones are short lived and the bad ones are band due to inherent viciousness.
History is really interesting. Politics is not so interesting in my opinion. First off, it was hard to get into because of the huge vocabulary he used. It also seemed to me that he kept rambling and going on about nonsense for a while. As soon as he starts off the cycle of explaining the governments is when I was able to comprehend what he was saying. It was downhill after he was done with the cycle because he used the same stuff he used in the introduction. And I felt like I was re-reading it. I liked the statement about how all governments have defects because I believe our government has major flaws with it right now. Overall I didn’t enjoy this essay.

Summary and Response to “The Myth of the Latin Woman”

The article “The Myth of the Latin Woman: I Just Met a Girl Named Maria” by Judith Ortiz Cofer is about the hardships that Latin women have to go through due to many stereotypes portrayed by the media. Cofer starts out be reliving an experience with a drunk man who re-enacted “Maria” from West Side Story and even though she was aggravated, she tried to keep her cool even though everyone around her was laughing and applauding. She states that growing up in New Jersey, she suffered from “cultural schizophrenia” which meant she had to kept true to her heritage while her friends got to act and dress the way they wanted. Cofer continues by explaining some of the stereotypes, such as the “hot tamale”, that she had to put up with and how men treated some women because they where Latina. The she relives some more stereotypical encounters with another man serenading her and a woman assuming that she was a waitress in a restaurant. Cofer concludes the article by stating that she hopes to change the media produced stereotypes from trashy Latina to a well educated and wise Latina.
I really enjoyed this essay because it gave me a taste of the hardships that my mother had to put up with. I also liked it because it talks about disproving stereotypes which I really think would be better for the world if we just got rid of all stereotypes. I also liked how she described the piropos because it seems funny that men trued to impress the girls like that. I did not like that she showed two examples of men serenading her because she is Latina and I felt like she was repeating herself. She showed one stereotype in the beginning, she did not have to show the same stereotype again.. Overall this was an interesting essay,

Summary and Response to “Stone Soup”

The article “Stone Soup” by Barbara Kingsolver is about the certain types of marriages and how it is okay for families to be different then the outline of the “Dad, Mom, Sis, Junior.” She starts the article by showing an example of a non-nuclear family at a soccer game cheering on a member of the family that has just scored a winning goal and she states “ I dare anybody to call this a broken home.” implying that even though they are not a common structured family, they still care about each other. Then she goes into detail on how she was raised in a nuclear family but now realizes that even though she is a single parent, her and her daughter are fine. Then she explains how people think that if a family is not nuclear, it is a mess of a family and if the marriage ends in a divorce it’s not labeled as finished, it is labeled as a failure. She states that she used to believe in this ideology of divorce being the lazy way out and as a child , she wanted to be part of a “Family of Dolls” but soon realized after she got married that there is a story that did not fall into her prince charming fairy tale which lead to a dead marriage. Kingsolver then relives the time right after she got divorced and how American customs claim that she was burdened with the task of single parenthood and some of her friends emphasized that by leaving her in her time of need. Then after she recovered she felt like her and her daughter was pitied but her daughter always looked on the bright side of having parents that don’t talk to each other. Kingsolver then goes back to family structures and states that to judge a family by its harmony is like judging a book by its cover . She goes back in time to show how nuclear families struggled to survive and how most of the family members had to work just to get by. Kingsolver goes to into detail about families during the Great Depression and explains that families where multigenerational due to lack of money for housing, She writes about how the “Family of Dolls” theory was introduced once the economy rose to make sure women gave their jobs to returning soldiers and single parent families sank and struggled economically. She states that families are always being reshaped due to economic tides and how single mothers are more likely to be employed now rather than in the fifties and are able to get a divorce and able to support a family in order to be “happy”. Kingsolver concludes the article by saying the faster we can get over the fairy tale nuclear family, the faster we can create an idea of community.
I didn’t like this essay at all because I believe that a family should have two parents and it is vital for the children to have two role models so they become successful in life. I was raised in a nuclear type of family and I do not cause as much trouble as kids that come from non nuclear families. This article was also jumpy. She kept jumping to different topics and It was hard to concentrate on the actual main topic. It was also hard to concentrate because she used a lot of vocabulary that I have never heard in my life before.
I considering actually buying a dictionary like you said. I did like the part near the end were she explained why Kingsolver named her title “Stone Soup”. It was puzzling me why the title made no sense when I started to read the article.

Summary and Response to “The Female Body”

The article “The Female Body” by Margaret Atwood is about how she views the female body. Atwood splits the article into sections and the first section is a response to a quote from a newspaper and she replies that the female body can looked at from many different aspects. Section two states the parts that a basic female body comes with. Part three of the article, Atwood displays the female body as a transparent plastic and each major part of a female body each has a certain color button to push for the plastic to illuminate. Section four is about a couple arguing over whether their daughter should be able to have a certain type of doll. Section five, Atwood goes through the many uses of the female body such as pregnancy, sex appeal, and prostitution. The Sixth part is a conversation with a woman and her daughter about sex and makes sure she doesn’t get it mixed up with love. In the last section, Atwood compares the female and male brain to each other and states that a female brain is more connected with itself and that is why women good listeners. The male brain however is less connected with itself and that explains why men feel like they have a void in their life that only a female body can fill.
I know a article about the female body might excite some teenage boys, but this one did not. I really did not understand this essay. It seemed that the author had a hard time keeping track writing this because the article kept jumping around on the most random points of the female body and it was hard to find the main point of the article. It was completely pointless how she had separated the article in sections. It was even hard to get the main point out of the sections. I found this article hard to keep reading. I never want to read an article like this ever again.

Why Kids should be raised in a Nueclear Family

When I was growing up, My parents always tried to tell me right from wrong, what to do in certain situations, and all the stuff good parents teach their kids. When I entered elementary school, a lot of kids only had one parent. I always noticed that these kids had a lot of problems with their behavior and health. I now realize that all the troublemaking came from a what I believe was a lack good parenting. I believe that a kid that is raised with married parents will behave better and be more successful than kids that are raised with a single and divorced parents.
A lot of the single parents that had kids in my class looked poorly dressed. I naturally assumed that these families had a low income, which most single parents do have. It is proven that if the kids are raised in a poor family, the children are most likely to become poorly educated and not be able to make a decent income. Mary Parke, a writer whose works talk about other family related problems, writes in one of her articles: “A higher risk for negative educational outcomes for children in single-parent families is due to living with a significantly reduced household income.” Friends of mine (the ones with married parents) along with myself actually want to go to college and pursuit degrees and actually want to be successful in our lives. “Children raised in intact married families are more likely to attend college.”(Secretariat for Family, Laity Women & Youth)
During my elementary days, I also noticed that kids of single parents were always sick. If my parents knew I was sick, they would take me to a doctor immediately and I would usually recover in a couple of days. But these kids stayed sick for long periods of time, not to mention various bruises and injuries they “mysteriously” obtained. In “Are Married Parents Really Better for Children?” Parke quotes “one study found children living in single-parent homes were more likely to experience health problems, such as accidents, injuries, and poisonings.” In “Why do children need married parents?” The Secretariat for Family, Laity, Women & Youth, a religious organization that was written many family orientated articles, wrote “A child living with a single mother is 14 times more likely to suffer serious physical abuse than is a child living with married, biological parents.” If a mom is having trouble with an abusive boyfriend they are most likely to take it out on their kids . Also, the stress element associated with raising these children without help from another adult can lead to a greater possibility of abuse.(Mouring) Married parents usually make sure their kids are in top health and they have half the stress of raising children removed because the other partner can help take part in raising the children.
In my neighborhood, there are a lot of broken home families. My best friend and I always like to walk around the neighborhood just for fun and we have witnessed more arrests than some cops have in their career. The majority of the crime-doers come from a broken home. Every night I can hear my neighbor and her son yelling at the top of their lungs at each other. When they are done arguing the teen will usually walk out of the house and most of the time he would return in a police vehicle. Children raised in intact married families are less likely to use drugs or alcohol and to commit delinquent behaviors(Secretariat). The Institute for Marriage and Public Policy conducted a study on 23 broken home families and out of the 23 studies reviewed, all but three found that family structure had an effect on crime or delinquency. In 19 of these 20 studies where a negative family structure effect was found, children from non-intact or single parent families had higher rates of crime or delinquency. I was raised by my parents never to yell at them, just walkout of the house or even worst commit a crime and I have a pretty clean record and rarely cause major trouble.
I really think that having married parents raise you up is a great experience because they both can teach your right from wrong, take care of you when your not feeling up to par and encourage you to do your best. I love my parents to death and could not imagine how kids could not live with both their parents. I feel sorry for kids with single parents and how they have to suffer through all the hardships that their parent puts them through.

Summary and Response to “The Rival Conceptions of God”

The Article “The Rival Conceptions of God” by C.S. Lewis is about the how some religions view God. He starts out by stating the views of Atheist and Christians and how all religions are right about all things but some are more right then the others. Then Lewis goes into detail the Pantheism and the Christian ideals of God. Then he raises a question a go. Then he concludes his article by how he used to be an Atheist and how he used the excuse of no god being “If a god good made the world, why has it gone wrong?” and states that is how it is pointless try to answer that because no one knows the true meaning of “just and unjust.”
I usually don’t like religious type articles even though I am a religious person my self, I actually wanted to finish this one. I liked the fact that this article was written by a former atheist that converted into Christianity and actually knew what he was talking about. I agree with him on how Christians and other religions should acknowledge that there are other religions and they not wrong in terms of god and the existence of man. I also agree with him that we can’t blame God on the condition of the world that it is in.
I’m curious on how my priest would take this essay.

Why Assisted Suicide should be allowed for some patients

Imagine yourself lying in a hospital bed. You fell a rush of mashed up food coming into your throat by a tube which you can’t see. In fact you can’t see anything nor move. The only two ways that you know that you’re alive is the horrible food coming through a slit in your throat and the fact you constantly bear intolerable pain. Victims of Terminal illnesses horrible accidents of war or everyday life have to live like this. Some may be worst or some may be better. But the fact is they wish for death. Yes I may sound a tad bit morbid but it’s the straight truth. Would you like it if you where their position? Would you want a way to end it? By legalizing Assisted Suicide these people can really rest in peace.
Some of the first reasons of people that are against Assisted Suicide say it is Unethical and Inhumane . During Ancient Rome and Greek time, they started to begin this procedure because they did not see life needed to be preserved and “ended anyone’s misery” if they saw they where tolerate of suicide. Now days, Assisted Suicide may seem
Hidalgo 2
that way but it really is not. First off the decision of the alternative would be made my the victim (If the victim can acknowledge the choice and can show evidence that he or she wants it done) or the close and immediate family members of the patient. Assisted Suicide would only be an option to people that met these conditions: 1)The patient has to be suffering from a terminal illness. 2) The patient will not benefit form a cure or a cure is not obtainable in a reasonable amount of time. 3) The Patient has to suffer from an illness that causes intolerable pain. 4)Unable to commit suicide with out an help of another. Assisted Suicide will not be offered to people who are depressed and feel that their lives are horrible. Before the doctor gives the medicine that causes death, The patient will have to go through a “cooling off period” in which the doctors observe the patient for a certain amount of time to see if the patient’s condition gets better or worst.
After all these conditions are met. Then the doctor will have the “go signal” to give the patient the death inducing medicine.
Another Reason people say that Assisted Suicide should not be allowed is because it would harm the United States’ Heath Care System. In some cases, Assisted Suicide can actually benefit it. First off their will not be any involuntary euthanasia in which doctors will automatically kill the patient if they think that the patient has no chance to live. The patient or immediate family will notify the doctor if they want to actually want to go through with the procedure. One of the ways that Assisted Suicides will benefit the nations heath care system is that it can save the HMO system money because they wont have a lot of patients hooked up to expensive machines that waste more money everyday due to inflation when doctors (under certain conditions ) can just
Hidalgo 3
pull the plug. One reason my it wont affect our health system is that it is the doctor’s and physician’s job to make the patient feel better. If making their misery go away by ending their life causes the them to feel better physically, then it’s the doctors job to help them.
One Reason why we should legalize Assisted Suicides is because most of the world looks up on them. Right now Canada is fighting the Government to change the laws on Assisted Suicide to their favor. In England, Anti-Assisted Suicide laws are being vetoed left and right due to the popularity of it. In the Netherlands, the number of assisted suicide requests per year is around 9700 and 2.6% of deaths are Euthanasia related and 57% of all doctors in the Netherlands have performed assisted suicides.
With today’s technology , lives are being extended with machines and other technology. Even though these people live longer, they are filled with pain and agony.
With Assisted Suicides and Euthanasia, these people can find relief and rest in peace.
It is Ethical, benefit’s the Heath Care System, and most of the world already legalized it.
That is why we should be able to end our lives of we were in that situation.

Summary and Response to “Letter to President Pierce”

The article “Letter to President Pierce” by Chief Seattle shows all the damage “white-man” has done to nature and how red man does not understand why. Seattle starts off by showing that white man take advantage of the land that they have taken over and when they are done with it, they just leave it like it is nothing of value. He states that the only reason white man doesn’t think that they understand him is because Seattle and all red-man are “Savage.” Seattle states that white man should in touch with nature but “is too numb to stench” meaning white man are too blind to see the affect they have on nature. Seattle writes that whites are causing their own demise by killing beasts and taking over everything and soon their will be nothing left for whites to have because they discard everything the obtain. He concludes the article by saying that he might be able to understand why the white man does this to nature if he knew what burns in white man’s mind.
I really liked this article because Seattle gets mad at white man for doing what they believe is right even though it is not. I like how he uses the white-man’s words against him by calling himself a savage so he can share his emotions and hardships with the reader. I also like the way that he makes the white-man look selfish by wasting land and killing animals recklessly and not recognizing the consequences. He also made the red man look innocent and peaceful by showing that they are in touch with nature because they would rather listen to a gentle wind blowing than a bunch of noise coming from a crowded city. This article really lets me see what the Indians see of white man and gives me a different opinion about them.
